NFL Week 3 Thursday Night Recap: Rams Prove They’re For Real

The Los Angeles Rams beat the Minnesota Vikings 38-31 in NFL Thursday Night Football proving not only that they’re the best team in the NFC, but that they’re the solid football betting choice to win the 2019 Super Bowl. Check out everything to know about the Rams’ impressive win!

Los Angeles Rams 38, Minnesota Vikings 31

Key Plays:  Jared Goff’s Amazing Night

Goff played the best game he’s ever played as a pro in the NFL. Fearful of running back Todd Gurley, Vikings’ coach Mike Zimmer spent most of his resources stopping the rush. That led to mismatch after mismatch. Most of the mismatches happened when linebacker #55 Anthony Barr had to run with one of the Rams’ highly skilled wide receivers.

Cooper Kupp out ran Barr for a 70-yard TD pass before Robert Woods did the same thing to Barr in the second half. Woods’ TD catch went for 31-yards. Goff threw for 251 yards in the first half. He also threw another TD pass to Kupp in addition to the 70-yarder.

At the end of the night, Goff had passed for 465 yards and 5 TD passes. Based on those stats, you’d think the Rams dominated the Vikings, but they didn’t, which shows that in a parity league like the NFL, not making the right adjustments (keeping a linebacker on a wide receiver after getting burned) leads to losses.

Vikings and Rams Squash the Total

Most felt defenses might rule, or at least have a say in the outcome of this past Thursday night’s game. Bettors settled on a 49 total. That’s nothing for two talented offenses like what the Vikings and Rams have.

Neither Minnesota, nor L.A. got the memo about defenses having a say. Minnesota’s offense played extremely well. It kept the Rams’ front 7 led by Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh in check for most of the night. Quarterback Kirk Cousins produced a 36 of 50 422 yards 3 TD stat line.

The Vikings scored 31 points while the Rams scored 38. The total of 69 points jumped 20 points over the settled 49. What’s incredibly interesting is that the football over/under betting line opened at 48.5 in some books and 49.5 in other books. Most football handicappers worked around a point to a point and a half, meaning that up until kickoff, nobody had a clear vision of how the game might play out.

Minnesota’s Problem Might Be at the Top

Minnesota’s pretty much the same team this season from last season. With the exception of an upgrade at the quarterback position, the Vikings haven’t changed that much. What’s with two straight weeks of bad play on the defense, then?

Head coach Mike Zimmer runs the Vikings’ defense. He makes the final decisions. The fact that Coach Zimmer didn’t switch things up so that Rams’ quarterback Jared Goff couldn’t continually make Anthony Barr look like a piece of bread fresh from the toaster says a lot.

Let’s not forget that the Vikings’ defense yielded 26 points to rookie quarterback Josh Allen in Week 2 in Allen’s first start in the NFL. Minnesota’s got good players, but like we mentioned above, players can only succeed if coaches put them in the right positions to succeed.

Nobody believes Anthony Barr can run with either Cooper Kupp or Robert Woods. Well, maybe nobody but Mike Zimmer.

Rams and Vikings Look Ahead

The Vikings battle Philadelphia in what might be a must win game. The Rams take on the rival Seattle Seahawks in the Great Northwest in what could be a sneaky difficult matchup for NFL’s hot Los Angeles squad..
