Heading Into NHL Season, Here Are Your Top 10 Stanley Cup Favorites

Monday, 01 October 2018 / Published in Bookie Tips

Only two seasons ago, the Pittsburgh Penguins dominated the National Hockey League. No online bookie should expect the Pens to dominate this season. In fact, based on current Stanley Cup odds the Pens are no better than the 8th to 9th choice to win Lord Stanley’s hardware.

Who’s the Top 10 that hockey bettors favor to win the Stanley Cup this NHL Season?

Top Stanley Cup Betting Choices to Start the NHL Season

  1. Toronto Maple Leafs +700

How can the Maple Leafs be favored to win the Stanley Cup? Two words, one name:  John Tavares. Tavares, the former New York Islanders’ top player, signed with the Maple Leafs. Tavares will start on the center line with both Auston Matthews and Nazem Kadri.

The Leafs should lead NHL in goals scored per match. Unless the centers suffer injuries, Toronto might average over 4 goals per match this season. That’s amazing, but it doesn’t mean Toronto wins the Stanley Cup.

Bookies should definitely watch the total in Leafs’ games the first couple of weeks, though.

  1. Tampa Bay Lightning +850

Lightning’s odds have drifted up to +900 in some books in Vegas. Use the line mover and set fair odds, around +850, in your sportsbook. Why? Although the Maple Leafs have gotten the most attention, Tampa should be the best team in the Eastern Conference this season like they were last season.

Tampa Bay boasts a great center line player in Steven Stamkos and maybe the best defensive player in NHL in Victor Hedman. Save for a Game 7 loss to Washington, Tampa might have won the Stanley Cup last year.

One thing to note is that goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy’s first full season as a starter happened last year. He’ll be tighter this season, meaning Tampa’s already awesome defense could be much better.

  1. Winnipeg Jets +850

Led by Patrick Laine, the Jets should have a formidable offense. Laine plays on the second line behind Mark Sheifele, Kyle Connor, and Blake Wheeler. Dustin Byflugien should anchor the defense while goalie Connor Hellebuyck could challenge for the Vezina Trophy this season.

Jets look tight. Make sure you set Stanley Cup max betting limits.

  1. Nashville Predators +1100

Last season, Nashville finished with the best record in the NHL Regular Season, 53-18-11 and 117 points. But, the Preds failed miserably in the playoffs. What happened? 23-year-old goaltender Pekka Rinne, who won the Vezina Trophy, got drubbed in the playoffs. He posted a .904 save percentage, an over 3.00 goals against average, and went 7-6.

The key for Nashville is whether Rinne can maintain his excellent play from the regular season into the playoffs. If he can’t keep himself mentally together, it won’t matter that the defense might be the best in NHL.

  1. Vegas Golden Knights +1100

Word of advice set max betting limits on the Vegas Golden Knights to win the Staley Cup. After running roughshod through the Western Conference, the Knights didn’t know how to handle the Washington Capitals in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

No problem. The team got better by signing Stastny to a 3-year deal. Stastny joins the front line with William Karlsson. Goalie Marc Andre-Fleury has a lot of hockey left while the egos are in short supply on the team because they’re still castoffs.

Vegas could be tough. Set those max betting limits.

  1. Washington Capitals +1100

As long as Alex Ovechkin plays for the Washington Capitals, the Caps will have a shot to win the Stanley Cup. Other players exist outside of Ovechkin, of course. Evgeny Kuznetsov, goalie Braden Holtby, T.J. Oshie, and Nicklas Backstrom were all awesome during last season’s NHL Playoffs.

It’s hard to see those guys being awesome again this season. Yes, the Capitals could win back-to-back Stanley Cups, but the chances are much worse than +1100. Set max betting limits but consider a max limit above the first 5 teams on this list.

  1. Boston Bruins +1100

The Eastern Conference is loaded with Washington, Toronto, and Tampa Bay all playing in the East. Boston’s a good hockey team. It’s difficult to see the Bruins making a run to the Stanley Cup because they’re bound to face the Leafs, Lightning, or Caps in the playoffs. Boston’s veteran group could slow down this season as well.

  1. Pittsburgh Penguins +1200

The Pens took a big step back last season after winning the Stanley Cup in two straight seasons. The Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin duo should be tight again, but the defense is a mess. Also, unless goalie Matt Murray rebounds from a tough 2017-2018, the Pens might only sneak into the playoffs again.

  1. San Jose Sharks +1200

The Sharks traded for defenseman Erik Karlsson. Karlsson, one of the top defenseman in NHL, could be the star player on the best blue line in hockey. If the Sharks can find some offense, they could upset Winnipeg, Vegas, and Nashville, and win the Western Conference.

Every pay per head agent on the planet should set max betting limits on San Jose at +1200 to win this year’s Stanley Cup. The Sharks got some bite.

  1. St. Louis Blues +2000

Because their odds are +2000, bookies should set max betting limits on the St. Louis Blues to win the Stanley Cup. St. Louis could surprise, but, more than likely, they finish behind Winnipeg, Nashville, Vegas, and San Jose in the Western Conference Playoffs.

Again, because their odds are at +2000, all bookies should set max betting limits.
